2008-2009 Workplace Flexibility – When Work Works initiative

Rochester was selected as one of thirty communities across the nation to promote workplace flexibility and business excellence in order to proactively address workforce issues such as recruiting, retaining and advancing qualified and skilled employees.  This is a 3-year grant given by the US Chamber, Families & Works Institute, TWIGA Foundation and funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. In June 2008, Rochester recognized nine local Sloan winners for Business Excellence in Workplace Flexibility, seven honorable mentions and had a total of 26 organizations apply for the award. In order to recognize our local winners, the Rochester Area Chamber and Workforce 2020 host a recognition ceremony. The 2008 ceremony involved over 200 people and over 60 different organizations and businesses.

2008-2009 Diversity In Business

The purpose of Diversity In Business is to identify, connect and motivate minority and women entrepreneurs in our greater Rochester community. We want to provide entrepreneurs with the tools and resources needed in order to increase business ownership, market and training opportunities. As a part of the conference, we want to motivate not only the entrepreneur but engage the business community in dialogue on the impact of diversity in business. This will be accomplished through our keynote speaker who continues to work with minority and women entrepreneurs as well as using innovation to overcome challenges involved in building a diverse organization.

2008-2009 Business Learning Network

These opportunities encourage professional growth and instill tools necessary for recruiting and retaining employees in today's ever growing and changing market.

2009-2010 Leadership Greater Rochester Program

Leadership Greater Rochester is a comprehensive ten-month program designed to educate participants about the leadership roles within the Rochester community. The program goal is to identify emerging leaders, expand their knowledge of the community and encourage them to take active, individual responsibility for participation and leadership in the future of Rochester. The program includes a two-day retreat and eight full-day sessions that offer different topics, experiences and discussions. Over 40 business professionals apply and 36 are selected to participate in this exciting course.

2009 Educators in the Workplace

The Educators in the Workplace Institute is designed to enhance the connections between the educator and the business professional.  This three-day institute is comprised of interactive work-site visits designed for the business professional to articulate the needs of today's workplace environment to area educators.  During the school year, the business professional visits the classroom to observe the education system.  Approximately 60 educators from the grater Rochester Area attend the Institute and 60 business professionals are involved in work-site visits or interactive panel discussions.

2008 STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) Education – Regional STEM Summit

The regional STEM summit is designed to promote advanced science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) courses to all students in the greater Rochester area. The continued growth and stability of our economy depends on a well-prepared pipeline of students with the education and skills to help keep regional business and industry viable. The regional STEM summit brings together business, higher education, local government and communities in an effort to inspire, inform and connect our students with real people in real and meaningful ways.

2008-2009 Learn.Do.Earn Program

In partnership with the Rochester Area School District, WF 2020 will implement the Learn.Do.Earn program in the fall 2008. The web-based program is business driven and designed to be utilized by teachers, parents and students in an effort to inform, motivate and guide students (grades 6-12) as they navigate their way through high school and beyond. Learn.Do.Earn uses eye-popping data to provide students with a statistical rationale and makes a compelling case for working hard now and taking challenging courses in math, science and language arts in order to be prepared for college, work and life. This will be launched in both Willow Creek Middle School and Mayo High School. Over the next three years, the program will be implemented throughout Rochester Public Schools, Catholic Schools and area districts.

WF 2020 Community Awareness Campaign

WF 2020 is a coalition of community leaders and stakeholders representing public, private and non-profit sectors who have come together to promote a globally competitive education and workforce development system for all people – Pre-K to our most seasoned worker/learner.
